Rainey Street
My husband and I are willing to check out anything that the city has to offer, but after walking around we quickly realized that maybe Rainey Street wasn’t a great place to bring a family. We still had to check out Banger’s Sausage and Beer Garden and it did look good, with quite a large beer selection and nice food options. For people not dining in and just eating outside at the communal first-come first-served tables, there’s an open seating area selling all sort of food to accompany your beers, specifically a whole roasted pig on the weekends, along with pretzels, bbq, fresh chicharons, and all sort of goodies. Although it’s not the beer halls like in Germany that we’ve been to in the past where people bring their families and kids. There weren’t any kids or families here at all.
Besides the restaurants and bars on this street, there is also a large area with about 10 food trucks and a nice seating area called the Rainey Street Food Truck Lot. After all this is Austin with food trucks everywhere.
This street looked really fun but it is definitely better for the young adult crowd and not so much for families.
For our last night’s hotel we stayed at the Hyatt Place located in the heart of downtown. To save some money we used an overnight parking lot just a few blocks from the hotel ($9 vs the hotel’s valet-only $42). Exhausted from all the walking and hiking we decided to order from Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken (they’re a large chain). It was excellent food for a great price, and close proximity to our Hotel. We also had to keep our budget in check at this point and this was a great option.
Since we were in the heart of downtown Austin, my husband and I had to get out for a late night dinner date. We walked around the city and decided on a nearby restaurant on West 6th street called Swift’s Attic. We had their chicken, molĂ©, and street corn entree to share and a couple of their signature cocktails. Service and decor at this reaturant is quite nice for a date. We then walked over to one of Austin’s oldest operating hotel since 1886, The Driskill. The decor here is an old Victorian style which adds to the rumors surrounding this historic building. The hotel is known for some “unexplained phenemenon.” I didn’t get to experience anything creepy when we were there.
Speaking of which, we decided to get some Vodoo Donuts nearby. This place was pretty busy at 10:30 p.m. serving fresh delicious donuts. With just a quick stroll around Downtown, it was really lively and happening late at night with live music and packed bars.
